    Description

This "Call of the Wild" catalog is from the Hettrick Mfg. Company of Toledo, Ohio. They made tents, automobile tops, horse blankets, awnings, covers for conestoga wagons, and various tarps. What is fascinating to me is that the camping gear illustrations feature women with "bobbed" hair, must be the "new woman", and the language encourages people to get outdoors because "play is as essential as work." I was surprised. I didn't know that that kind of thinking started so early. I wasn't able to find a date other than they offer tops for 1923 and 1924 cars. One camping outfit is called "Romany," as in buy this and you can play like a gypsy. The catalog measures 8.5" X 3.75" folded up, it has 23 pages, and is in good condition except for some soiling on the cover. This is a great piece of early roadside Americana.
