    Here is a rare fossil, from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
    It is a fossil crayfish (also known as crawfish or crawdad). Scientific name Procambarus Primaevus.  These are rarely found, and when they are, they are found in the near-shore "sandwich" area of Fossil Lake.  That is because they needed well-circulated water, and the deep water of the middle of the lake would have been too stagnant and brackish.  Lance Grande of the Univeristy of Chicago also speculated that crawfish and shrimp may have possibly come from tributaries into the lake.
    Crawfish, also called crayfish or crawdads, or freshwater or mountain lobsters, are related to lobsters.
    This specimen is about 2.4" (6.1 cm.) in length, excluding the long antenna. One long antenna is still present, as you can see. In fact, there is an unattached seccond antenna at the bottom of the plate.
    Please note that both chelipeds (large front pinchers) are indeed present, and in front of the animal, and come together to where they are touching. The plate is about 3.7" by 5.3" in an irregular shape, and it weighs 5.95 oz.
