"Tonight"
"Tonight"
is a daily evening newspaper created by the Communist Party in 1937.
It ceases to appear in 1953.
General information newspaper, it organizes cycling events after the Liberation. Thus in 1946, he created the "Ronde de France", which was intended to be a prefiguration of a Tour de France without its pre-war organizers or their continuators.
History
1937 - 1939, the newspaper of the Popular Front and the Spanish War
In order to compete with "Paris-Soir", Maurice Thorez formulated at the end of 1936 the project
create a daily newspaper to appear in the evening.
The origin of the funds used to launch this officially independent body is controversial.
Did the Spanish Republic, of which the newspaper made itself the vigilant defender, participate in the financing?
The first issue comes out on 1 Mars , 1937. It is placed under the direction of two famous writers.
One is known for belonging to the Communist Party, Louis Aragon, the other Jean-Richard Bloch is a very close sympathizer, who joined the PCF in 1939, shortly before the signing of the German-Soviet Pact.
However, the newspaper is not intended to be a political organ of the party.
Its editor-in-chief, Elie Richard, was recruited for his "technical" skill: he previously worked at Paris-Soir.
The “economic” management of the title is in the hands of Gaston Bensan. The latter, "a man in the shadows", used to Party publishing houses, administrator of the newspaper, had sole control over the sources of funding
which allow a start-up print run of 100,000 copies.
If "Tonight" never managed to reach the draws for "Paris-Soir", it managed to find a readership
eager for the latest news at the end of the day.
In Mars 1939, the circulation was 250,000. Non-loss-making, "Tonight" owes its notoriety to the quality of its employees.
Thus, the head of the foreign policy service is Paul Nizan, who also carries out journalistic activity head on.
and romantic writing.
Pascal Pia is the head of the general information service, until his departure for Republican Algiers in August 1938.
Professional journalists include René (e) Dunan, Édith Thomas and Andrée Viollis, both
specializing in major reportage surveys.
The Spanish conflict is covered by 18 journalists and reporters-photographers. The big names in left-wing journalism follow one another to describe and illustrate the fighting on the Republican side: Édith Thomas, Andrée Viollis, already cited, Simone Téry, Louis Parrot, Stéphane Manier, Georges Soria.
Special envoys of "Tonight", photographers called to become famous, share the daily life with their photos which are now used as archives of the Spanish Civil War:
Gerda Taro, who was killed on the Brunete front in July 1937, Robert Capa, his companion,
official photographer for "Tonight" until the Republicans retired to France in 1939.
Chim, alias David Seymour, and Mathieu Corman.
Considered close to the Communist Party, the
daily prohibited August 25, 1939
,
at the same time as "L'Humanité" and all the publications of this party, suspected of supporting the German-Soviet pact.
1940: Under German occupation
The daily will be allowed to appear under the direction of Jules Dumont, being considered of lesser notoriety
than Humanity by the occupier. However
he did not reappear
.
1944 - 1953: euphoria and decline of the newspaper
The daily newspaper only reappeared on August 22, 1944, under the leadership of Louis Parrot, one of its pre-war editors. Louis Aragon, organizer of the "Letters" Resistance, returned to Paris in late September 1944
takes over the "direction", which in fact goes to Jean-Richard Bloch
when he returned to France in January 1945 after having spent the war in the USSR,
where he was the voice of France on Radio-Moscow.
At the end of 1946, he was elected to the Council of the Republic, the new name of the Senate, thus reinforcing the political weight of the evening newspaper.
But 15 died suddenly on Mars 1947. Aragon is then the sole director of Tonight.
He is assisted by one of his party comrades, an old journalist, Fernand Fontenay.
In 1949 Aragon brought North a JEUNE writer of 28 years, André Stil to ensure the chief editor of the newspaper. But the following year, during the Party's XII Congress, André Stil was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party and "bombed", in his words, editor of L'Humanité, despite the anger and opposition of his " mentor". To replace him Aragon obtains the appointment alongside him of an assistant director, also a JEUNE writer, Pierre Daix. Pierre Daix assumed this responsibility from April 1950 to Mars 1953. This one, equally surprised by his "parachuting", narrates in his "revisited memories" this episode of his journalistic career:
"Such a weight of responsibility, learning forced marches from an evening newspaper which then had four editions a day and one on Sunday, took away my leisure. I got up at five in the morning and represented the newspaper at the premieres of theaters, the music hall, the best boxing matches (...). I sponsored cycling races like the Boucles de la Seine
"
The ousting of Communist ministers and the start of the Cold War will gradually challenge the existence of the newspaper,
whose administration was twinned with that of L'Humanité in 1947: the two titles were brought together in the same building, 37 rue du Louvre in Paris, after sharing the same premises with
L'Humanité, Liberation and Regards at 6 boulevard Poissonnière.
The daily, which has lost its autonomy, is then caught in a spiral of decline which affects many titles born in the Resistance, and in particular the communist press.
On 2 Mars 1953, he disappears.
Stalin died a few days later and so it was "
French letters
", which he has just taken over as Aragon publishes the drawing of Stalin seen by Picasso, which will trigger a small politico-artistic affair ...
