OMAS TRIRATNA
*excerpt from Omas' booklet
As the twentieth century draws to a close and the dawn of the twenty-first century approaches, the world is witnessing social, cultural and political transformation on an unprecedented scale.
This has inspired us at OMAS to study different philosophies which seem most promising and effective for making the world a better place in the coming millennium.
In the OMAS tradition of paying tribute to the most significant historical events and cultural trends of our time, we have dedicated this new project to the Buddhist teaching.
Today, the roots of this philosophy are having truly meaningful and optimistic impact throughout our global community.
The Triratna pen is designed to foster the Buddhist spirit of universal compassion, peace and prosperity in all nations and all levels of society.
In the ancient Sanskrit language of India, the name Triratna means "Three Gems", the Buddhist Trinity.
The Three Gems are the Buddha, who is the teacher of universal compassion; the Dharma, his teaching, symbolized by a wheel; and the Sangha, the community of Buddhist faithful. The wheel is the most important icon in Buddhism as it symbolizes the teacher and his teaching in all aspects and the salvation of humanity. All are faithfully represented on the Triratna pen.
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was the crown prince of the Shakya Kingdom in what is now Northeastern Nepal who renounced kingship to find a remedy for the world’s ills. After meditating for six years he reached enlightenment and ascended to heaven to share his discovery with his mother.
As the pen cap portrays, the Buddha next descended to earth to spread his teaching in the human world. His followers wave palm fronds in a gesture of joyous respect, while one holds a parasol above his head. On the barrel, the Supreme Philosopher is shown seated on an ornate throne with the hand gesture of teaching the sacred doctrine (dhammacakkapavat-tanamudra). Festoons of flowers appear above his head while flowers and stones are arrayed below.
These hand-sculptured images are completed by a band at the cap's border with a twisting motif, similar to those found in classical Indian Buddhist sculpture. Underneath this motif it is possible to se the colored OMAS proprietary vegetal resin that supports the precious metals. The black vegetal resin of the gold edition symbolises the blessed eve of the Buddha’s enlightenment, while the yellow-orange resin of the silver version represents the robes of the Buddhist monks.
The cap’s top portrays the wheel (dharma-chakra) symbolising the endless coming and going, birth and death, the endless suffering. The Omas name is engraved on the cap band. The end of the clip is decorated with three more wheels, the hubs of which are embedded with three rubies.
Both the nib and the piston knob are also decorated in accordance with these themes.
The pen uses a piston filled system while the feeder is made of genuine ebonite using two channels.
The pens are made out of 18k. gold and .925 silver.
The design of the OMAS Triratna pen is unique in its use of three-dimensional forms and surface treatments. The use of the three rubies and the precious metal piston knob add an even greater value to the collections worth.
The gold version is manufactured in an edition of 563 pieces to symbolize the birth date of Buddha.
The silver is made in an edition of 2541 pieces to acknowledge the anniversary of his death this year.
Complimentary to the pen, OMAS has developed a unique yellow-orange color ink.
A specially designed package will complete the collection, in the finest OMAS tradition.
This project commemorates the life of Buddha, a philosopher whose teaching of universal compassion continues to influence millions of people of different nationalities, social classes and religious faiths
