    Masonic Patch Commemorating 1st African Lodge and 1st Elected African Sheriff.
    Prince Hall,
    Worshipful Master ofAfrican Lodge No.1 petitioned the Grand Lodge of England, the Mother GrandLodge of the World, for a charter on March 2, 1784 and was granted. AfricanLodge No.1 became No.459, the first Lodge of Blacks in America. Lodge No.459grew and prospered to such a degree that Worshipful Master Prince Hall wasappointed a Provincial Grand Master in 1791 and out of this grew the firstBlack Provincial Grand Lodge.

    This served Walter well in later years as he became involved in politics and in1869 he was Elected Sheriff of Fort Bend County Texas. This made Walter MosesBurton the First Black Elected Sheriff in the Country. From 1874 to 1882 Walteralso served as a Texas State Senator where he championed for the education ofBlacks.
    The Latin words at the bottom of the Patch “LUX ET LEX” which means “LIGHTAND LAW”.
