by Jeanne G. Weeks and Donald Treganowan, Chilton Book Co., NY, 1969 First Edition.
"The history of western or Occidental design begins in Spain during the early fifteenth century when Christian motifs or symbols began to pervade those formalized geometric and floral designs of the Orient. From this historical beginning the authors trace the influence of Moorish weavers to France, where rug and carpet design reached the ultimate of refinement and quality at the famous manufactories of Aubusson and Savonnarie. From France the authors trace the development of the art to England, Scandinavia, Greece, and America. In treating the early homemade rugs of New England, the Shaker rugs and the rugs of the American Indian are discussed. A special section is devoted to the American Indian rugs themselves. Each country developed its own ethnic designs, which became rigidly maintained by each successive generation (with only minor variations) as the craft of hand embroidery or weaving was passed down from mother to daughter in the household, from father to son in the manufactories." This is an invaluable resource reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique American and European rugs and carpets.
