"For almost one hundred years the cuddly, plush Teddy Bear has been a sign of compassion and kindness thanks to our twenty-sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt.
In 1902a cartoonist, Clifford Berryman, captured the hearts of millions with a series of cartoons depicting President Roosevelt refusing to shoot the one and only defenseless bear he saw on a four day hunting trip.  The president thought it unfair to shoot the ear which was cornered and tied to a tree.  Soon afterwards, the bear became the mascot of "Teddy" Roosevelt and was transformed into children's toys.  In the five years following the infamous hunting trip, know as the Barenjahre or Bear Years, the production of the Teddy Bear has soared worldwide."
