Title:
Nuo Male God(Nuo Gong)
Brief Introduction:
>
This exquisite and unique mask is carved out by hand of folk artists without using any machine in China. This mask is Nuo Male God(Nuo Gong). Nuo god and goddess are spouse, who are worshiped in Nuo altar in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other provinces. Shamans of Nuo altar place the two statues that are made of wood on the table in Nuo ceremony. Nuo god and goddess appeared before Tang Dynasty. The legends about Nuo god and goddess can be divided into two types:"the type of cattle herdsman worship man's head" and "the type of flooding disasters-brother marrying sister". The latter type can be seen as different texts of myths of Fuxi and Nuwa. The performances in the Nuo theatre in Guizhou in southwestern China. In 1988, just after the beginning of the Chinese new year, in a village high on the plateau of Guizhou, people gather in the center room of a farmer's house. The room is about seven-foot square and is illuminated by candles, the air misty and fragrant with smoking incense sticks. The crash of gongs and drums hurts the ears, the rhythm insistent, pierced by the sharp call of an ox horn. In the middle of the room a Nuo wizard chants and dances in trance as if drunk and crazy. In front of the wall facing the door is a shrine dominated by two wood sculptures of the god and goddess of Nuo: Nuo Gong (the God of the East Mountain) and Nuo Po (the Goddess of the South Mountain). Incense sticks and candles burn in front of them and money and food offerings are piled high. Near the god and goddess are items of religious practice: a shi dao (knife), pai dai (belt), and gua zi (divining instrument). Under the shrine--which actually sits atop a table--are the consecrated masks of the Nuo gods. Behind the shrine are paintings of Nuo gods, each about two-feet by four-feet. Plastered on the wall next to the paintings are exorcistic charms and couplets which tell of good luck.
