    Description

    These
    beautiful wooden, hand carved, and painted theatre masks were purchase nearly 20 years at ago at a Minneapolis, Minnesota Estate Sale.  I didn't know what they were, but they did look oriental to me.  I had them for several years before I found out that there were probably either Chinese or Japanese theatre masks.  However, as you can imagine I have not found any in the Twin Cities that know much more that they are theatre mask or dancing masks.  They are carved of wood and have no obvious damage other than they many need cleaning.  All three have wires on the back which I used for hanging as I believe the person before me also did.  Each of them also has a leather strap about 2" long attach with 2 small nail on the back below the mouth.  I am not sure what the strap was used for, but I assume they were gripped by the teeth to hold the mask to the face.  I have never seen any others except in pictures.  I have no idea what the age is except I have had them for nearly 20 years and they were needing cleaning when I purchased them.  The stated price is for all 3 masks.
